Decongestants Are Effective Against Allergies

Sudafed Decongestant Tablets
Decongestants are a sort of medicine that can offer you short-term relief from a runny or blocked nose (nasal congestion) caused by allergies.

GPs or pharmacists often advise decongestants to ease the signs and symptoms of common conditions such as hay fever, colds & flu, and other allergic reactions.

They work by bringing down the swelling of the inflamed blood vessels in one of your respiratory parts, the nose, which helps unblock the airways.

Decongestants are usually available as –

  • Tablets or capsules
  • Nasal Sprays
  • Liquids or syrups (for kids)
  • Flavoured powders to dissolve in warm water

Most decongestants are available over-the-counter from your pharmacy without a prescription. Some decongestants are available in combination with anti-histamines and/or painkillers.

Usage of Decongestants

Most decongestants are ought to be used at least three to four times a day. Make sure you check the patient information leaflet for advice about how often to use it and how much to take it. If you are not sure about the usage of decongestants, don’t hesitate to check with your GP.

Decongestants nasal sprays should not be used for more than a week. That’s because using decongestants for more than a week can aggravate your nasal congestion. Talk to your GP if your symptoms fail to improve even after using decongestants for prescribed duration.

Probable Side Effects

Usually, decongestants do not have side effects if used appropriately. Even if you experience them, they are mild and subside after some time. Probable side effects include nasal irritation, headache, dry mouth, sore throat, feeling restless and feeling sick. These side effects often subside after the completion of treatment. Serious side effects such as skin rashes, breathlessness and hallucinations may occur in rare cases.

Drug Interactions

Before using decongestants, it is highly recommended that you seek advice from your GP, especially if you are taking any other medicines. Oral decongestants can alter the effect of certain medications. For instance, if you take oral decongestant such as Sudafed Decongestant Tablets while you are already under treatment with depression medicines, you are more likely to have low blood pressure.

It is always recommended to use oral or nasal decongestants after consulting your GP or pharmacist.

Acne Scar Removal Treatment

Silderm Dual Action Scar Gel

Acne scar can sometimes develop as a complication of acne. An acne spot can lead to scarring. However, it is more common when the most serious forms of spots burst and damage the skin.

Scarring may also occur if you squeeze or pick your spots; hence, it is important that you avoid doing so.

Usually, there are three types of acne scars viz. ice pick scars, rolling scars and boxcar scars.

Acne Scar Treatment
Acne scar removal treatments are considered a type of cosmetic surgery, which is not available on the NHS. You need to check with your GP if you think of having a cosmetic surgery. Many private clinics offer treatment for acne scarring.

There are many acne scar removal creams that can help you to get rid of those hypertrophic scars. While treatment can definitely improve the overall appearance, it cannot get rid of scars completely. After using effective acne scar removal cream or treatment, most people notice 50% to 70% improvement in their overall skin texture.
Following are some of the effective acne scar removal treatment options:
  • Silicone Gels
Silicone gels are available at pharmacies. They help heal skin to reduce the redness and minimise hypertrophic or keloid scars. Silicone gel should be placed over the scar for approximately 12 hours a day. You need to use it regularly for three months. For instance, Silderm Dual Action Scar Gel is found to be the best acne scar removal cream. You can ask your GP or pharmacist to know more about silicone gels.
  • Acne Scars Creams
Vitamin E cream is often recommended for self-management of acne scar, but there is no scientific evidence to suggest that it is effective. However, massaging with Vitamin E skin cream can nourish the skin and make it supple.
  • Laser Therapy
Also called light therapy, laser therapy can reduce the redness of the scar by targeting the congested blood vessels in the scar. Laser surgery is used to make the scar tissue flatter. This is done by removing the upper layers of the skin, thereby stimulating the collagen production in the deep layers.
  • Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers are available as injections that are used to plump up pitted scars. Dermal filler treatment is a bit costly and results are temporary.

It is always recommended to see your GP before using any acne scar removal cream or treatment. Your GP will be able to advise you the suitable treatment for removal of acne scars.

NHS Choices Pharmacy Can Help With Out-of-hours Medications

NHS Choices Pharmacies

If you run out of your medications outside the normal opening hours and you need them urgently, there are some ways to get your supply quickly, even if you are away from home.
If you have a prescription and urgently require the medications, make sure you follow below-mentioned steps:
  • Use NHS choices pharmacy search service to find any nearby pharmacies and their working hours if your local pharmacy is closed. Some of the NHS choices pharmacies are open until midnight or even later, and even on public holidays.
  • You can call NHS 111 free of charge if you would like to speak to someone first. The person you speak will be able to look out for an out-of-hour pharmacy or another NHS service in your locality.
  • You could try contacting your GP in case of urgent need of medicines. Your GP should have details of out-of-hour service that is recorded in his answering machine. Your GP runs this kind of service outside the working hours and even on public holidays.
  • If you need your medicines urgently and tried above steps and failed, use the NHS service search to find a nearest accident & emergency unit.
If you require over-the-counter (OTC) medications such as antacids or painkillers like paracetamol and you cannot find an open pharmacy, you can approach supermarkets, newsagents or petrol stations. These places may stock a basic range of OTC medicines and have longer opening hours than community pharmacies.
If you do not have a prescription and you run out of your prescription-only medicines, you may get an emergency supply from a chemist without a prescription. You will be interviewed by your pharmacist to find out whether you are in desperate need of medicines, whether you will be able to get your prescription without much delay, or whether the medicine is prescribed by your doctor.
Your pharmacist needs all information before they supply a prescription-only drug without a prescription in case of emergency. They may not provide you the medicine if they are not satisfied or convinced. You might have to pay for the service provided and the medicines supplied.
If you need your medicines urgently and you are away from home, you can consult with a local doctor and a prescription for a limited supply. You still need an open pharmacy if you get a prescription from a local doctor. Alternatively, you can approach NHS walk-in centre service.
Pharmacy Outlet, an online pharmacy registered with General Pharmaceutical Council, can supply you the medicines through repeat prescription service. This can help prevent you from running out of medicines.

Let’s take a look at some of the interesting facts that will help us understand what kind of medicines online pharmacies provide and the difference between ethical and unethical internet pharmacies.
  • One must be very careful when choosing an online pharmacy, because the internet is full of unregulated and illegal medical websites. Some are even connected to unregulated doctors and pharmacists.
  • Websites that are not registered might provide you counterfeit medicines that could be harmful to your health. Such online pharmacies offer medications that are prepared under substandard conditions, which cannot be trusted to be effective or safe.
  • There are a very few UK online pharmacies that are regulated and provide online prescriptions only in the UK. Pharmacy Outlet is one of those few UK online pharmacies that are authorised to provide online prescriptions.
  • The chemist that dispenses medicines for an online pharmacy should be registered and regulated by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). Also, the online pharmacy must be registered with the UK drug regulatory body, MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency).

Registered UK online pharmacies sometimes offer medications that are not offered by the NHS. For example, over-the-counter (OTC) medicines for hair loss and to reduce the facial hair growth. It is possible to get certain OTC medicines easily through an internet pharmacy.

What Are The Treatment Options For Hayfever?

It’s spring and people must have already started with those irritating sniffles and itchy eyes!
One in five Brits suffer from hay fever. How to know you are one of them? First, you must know what is hay fever.
Hay fever is a common allergic condition that is often termed as seasonal allergies. Your GP would call it “allergic rhinitis”.
What triggers it off? Pollen triggers it off. Pollen is a powdery substance that is released by trees, grass and weed into the air during spring, summer and fall, respectively. 95% of hay fever sufferers are allergic to grass pollen. Other possible allergens that trigger hay fever include pet dander, mould, dust mites and pollutants.
The clinical features of hay fever are runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, puffy eyes, cough, sore throat and postnasal drip.
How to treat hay fever?
Try to start with prevention. If you have seasonal allergic rhinitis, limit outdoors activities, especially when pollen count is high. Saline sprays or nasal irrigation can help eradicate pollen particles from your nose. Saline sprays are easily available at your pharmacist.
If your hay fever symptoms persist even after nasal irrigation, certain OTC or prescription medicines would work well. People with severe allergy require immunotherapy.
  • Antihistamines
An oral antihistamine is probably the best treatment for hay fever. There are several types of antihistamines available in the pill form, oral solution form (for kids) and nasal sprays. These medicines ease your sneezing, nasal congestion, postnasal discharge and itchy eyes. Some antihistamines are available on providing a prescription. Talk to your GP for a suitable oral antihistamine.
  • Decongestants
Decongestants open up your blocked nose. They are available in conventional pills and nasal sprays. You need to be very careful while using nasal decongestants. They can aggravate your congestion if you use them for more than three days. Decongestant eye drops are effective against red, itchy and watery eyes.
  • Corticosteroids
Corticosteroids are recommended by a specialist if antihistamines or decongestants fail to treat hay fever. They are even considered safe and effective. Corticosteroid tablets and nasal sprays bring down the inflammation. Self-medication with corticosteroids is strictly prohibited.
  • Immunotherapy
Immunotherapy is the best hay fever treatment. It is given as daily pills or injectable, and it provides long-term relief from allergy or hay fever. Your doctor will administer small doses of allergens that can bother you. However, over the time, your body will start getting used to them. Immunotherapy is given at your doctor’s clinic.
To know more about how to treat hay fever, you can see your GP or a specialist.
Looking for the treatment for hay fever? Check out Pharmacy Outlet! It deals in a wide range of OTC hay fever medicines.

Electronic Prescription Service Of Pharmacy Outlet

The Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) is the NHS service that gives you the chance to send prescription electronically through GP to the pharmacy.
What does EPS mean for you? Usually, you need to visit your GP to pick up your paper prescription and wait at your pharmacy to get your medicines dispensed. Instead, your prescribing doctor will send prescription electronically to Pharmacy Outlet, saving your time.
Is EPS right for you?
Yes, it is right for you if you suffer from a stable condition and you do not want to visit your GP every time to collect your prescription. It is also useful if you want your medications delivered at your home. It may not be right for you if you do not get prescriptions very often.
How to use EPS?
First, you need to choose your chemist to receive the electronic prescription service. And this you can do by nominating your local or online pharmacy. Any UK registered pharmacy operating full electronic prescription service can be nominated.
Patients do not have any restriction to nominating a chemist near their practicing GP. However, a patient can only nominate one pharmacy at a time. To nominate Pharmacy Outlet, all you need to do is click here or contact the customer support team on 03333 222 400.
Can you change the nomination or cancel EPS?
Yes, you can change or cancel your nomination for electronic prescription service. If you wish to discontinue your electronic prescription or repeat prescription electronically, inform your GP. If you wish to change or cancel your nomination, check with your GP and pharmacy that you have nominated for EPS. Make sure you tell them prior to your next prescription due or your prescriptions may go to the incorrect place.
Using NHS repeat prescription or electronic prescription at Pharmacy Outlet is very easy:
  • Tell the pharmacist who your GP is
  • The pharmacist will work with your GP to check and dispense your prescription medicines
  • Your prescription is delivered to your preferred UK address and the pharmacist will remind you about your next prescription due
Electronic Prescription Service helps save the environment – it is a paperless work!

Benefits of Electronic Prescription Service for Pharmacists

The Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) allows your GP surgery to send your prescriptions directly to the pharmacy. EPS will eventually remove the need for the paper prescriptions. Let’s have a look at the benefits of EPS for pharmacists.
Less sorting and less paper work
There is less sorting and less paper to send to the NHS prescription services when pharmacists use electronic prescription service. Only a few signed tokens are to be sent to the NHS prescription service at the end of the month. There is no need to sort or file as done of paper prescriptions.
No need to enter detailed information
An electronic prescription contains the patient’s information; hence, there is no need to need to type the details into the dispensing system.
Reduced queries related to prescription
A prescribing GP has to use a standardised medicinal dictionary and must complete all fields before sending prescriptions electronically. Eventually, this improves prescription accuracy and decreases the risk of patients receiving incorrect medication.
EPS decreases the risk of receiving and dispensing counterfeit prescriptions, as an electronic prescription cannot be lost. Pharmacists receive fewer reimbursement queries from the NHS prescription service.
Improves stock control
Using electronic prescriptions in advancement of the patient’s arrival means a pharmacist has ample time to order any out of stock medicines. EPS indeed helps pharmacists to order stock and dispense medicines in advance. This further helps reduce the longer waiting times for patients.
No need for a prescription collection
Pharmacists do not need to collect paper prescriptions from GP; everything is done online, saving their time. They need not require waiting for paper prescription to arrive through the post.
Electronic Prescription service is fantastic; the prescription is exactly the one that arrives on the computer screen of pharmacists, with no margin of human errors. EPS is completely accurate. It speeds up the processing, as it is a paperless work and pharmacists can prepare the repeat prescription in advance at patient’s convenience.
Pharmacy Outlet, a UK’s registered online pharmacy, offers EPS services. You can nominate this online pharmacy to fulfil your electronic repeat prescription.

How To Get Relief From Hayfever?

Hay fever, also called allergic rhinitis, is caused when the body reacts to a substance called pollen. Other allergens responsible for causing hay fever include dust mites, pet dander, pollutants and moulds. People sensitive to these allergens are often vulnerable to hay fever.
Allergens invade the body through the nose, mouth or skin, triggering an allergic reaction. When this happens, the body releases a chemical known as histamine, which is responsible for the inflammation of the nose, eyes and throat.
Tree pollen is one of the most common allergens that affect suffers at the specific period to time when the tree pollen is released, especially during spring. Someone who is allergic to tree pollen may suffer from persistent hay fever.
Signs & Symptoms
  • Sneezing
  • Nasal congestion
  • Postnasal drip
  • Itchy, red and watery eyes
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Difficult sleeping
How to relieve hay fever?
The best hay fever relief is the avoidance of the triggering allergen. Many people get relief from hay fever simply by avoiding the allergen. Simple measures such as wearing a protective mask, sunglasses and applying balm around the nostrils can help prevent the invasion of allergen.
Here are some of the best hay fever relief measures:
  • Keep a track on pollen forecast and stay indoors when the count is relatively high
  • Nasal irrigation with saline water helps remove pollen and other allergens
  • Apply an organic, drug-free allergen barrier balm around the nostrils to trap the pollens and other allergens and help avert an allergic reaction
  • Wash your hair and take a hot shower bath after arriving home on high pollen days
  • Keep your doors and windows closed when indoors; use a good air filter that traps even small particles
  • Wear wrap-around sunglasses when you go outside to protect your eyes from pollen
Hay fever relief with medications
An oral antihistamine is the first drug of choice when it comes to treating hay fever. Antihistamines are available as tablets, liquids (for children) and nasal sprays. The recommended antihistamines are to be taken once in a day and produce less drowsiness.
In association with antihistamines, you may require decongestant nasal sprays and/or eye drops. Your GP or pharmacist will advise you specific hay fever medicine depending on the complexity of your symptoms. If antihistamines or decongestants fail to provide relief, you may require steroid tablets or nasal sprays.
Hay fever medications should be taken regularly to achieve relief. Irregular treatment will not provide relief. In addition to hay fever medicines, you must follow the above-mentioned hay fever relief measures.
Check out Pharmacy Outlet for the best hay fever relief medications. Make sure you check with your doctor before using any medicine for hay fever.

A Definitive Guide On How To Buy Medication Online

In today’s time, online pharmacy services are becoming extremely sought after. With the National Health Service (NHS) always being heavily burdened, people find it extremely difficult to get an appointment with a NHS affiliated GP for common ailments and get NHS prescriptions.
The online pharmacy services are a boon for innumerable people, who find no time travelling to a local pharmacy due to hectic schedule. Although online pharmacy will never replace a NHS GP, it will always be welcomed as an easy, convenient and reasonable option.
Consulting pharmacy services is quite easy and fast, but there are certain things you should check before getting connected to one. So, before you buy medication online, check out the following guidelines:
  • Check for MHRA accreditation
Getting your prescriptions, irrespective of electronic, private or repeat, can be easily done by using an online pharmacy website. Anybody selling medicines in the United Kingdom through a website must be registered with the MHRA – Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency. You can check the MHRA logo on the website’s home page.
The MHRA is an drug regulatory body that comes under the Department of Health in the UK, which is responsible for ensuring that medicines and medical devices work and are absolutely safe to use. So, when you plan to buy medication online from an internet pharmacy, check whether that pharmacy is registered with the MHRA and is compliant with quality standards and regulatory norms.
  • Check for GPhC accreditation
Every pharmacy store in the UK, including the one that provides online service, must be registered with General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) to meet the quality standards for licenced pharmacies. GPhC is upholding public trust and standards in pharmacy.
It is the independent regulatory body for pharmacy in Great Britain. Its objective is to protect and encourage the interest of people who use online pharmacy services. Look for GPhC logo on the home page of the online pharmacy.
  • UK-based dispensing pharmacy
A genuine and legal online pharmacy site that is operating with all the required clearance will have the UK’s address displayed on the website. Before you buy medication online, verify that the chemist is physically located in the United Kingdom.

Are There Any Injections For Hayfever?

For the millions of hay fever sufferers in the UK, there are a few effective treatment options available to provide relief from sneezing, a runny or stuffy nose and itchy eyes.
Many people opt for hay fever tablets and nasal sprays from a pharmacy to overcome nasal irritation and itchy eyes. Severe cases of hay fever need immunotherapy that aims to treat allergy efficiently. Immunotherapy is also called desensitisation or allergy shots.
The therapy is performed at an allergist’s clinic. Several doses of allergens are injected under the skin over a number of years. It is advised to allow your body to get used to ab allergen, thereby treating and preventing allergic symptoms. With injection immunotherapy, treatment is required for a number of years.
Does immunotherapy cure hay fever?
No! Immunotherapy will not cure hay fever. However, allergists describe this type of hay fever jab as one of the closest things to a cure.
Is there any other injection for hay fever?
Another injection for hay fever that most doctors recommend for severe hay fever cases is a corticosteroid injection, which is often referred by the brand name Kenalog. Steroid injections for hay fever carry certain side effects, as they weaken the immune system during the course of treatment.
Steroid injections are unlikely to be available on the NHS. But, they are available privately after providing a doctor’s prescription. Most times, experts do not advise steroid injections for hay fever due to certain risks of side effects. There are other hay fever treatments that are effective and produce less or no side effects.
The hay fever jab or vaccine could help control the allergic symptoms caused by pollen. There are new hay fever vaccines in the development, which could help people overcome hay fever symptoms.
Some of the hay fever jabs contain a substance (pollen) that triggers allergic reaction. On injecting allergy shots, the immune system recognises the allergen and considers it as harmless that does not need to be attacked.
Immunotherapy is probably the last treatment option after antihistamines, decongestants and corticosteroids fail to work. It is considered safe and effective in people with severe allergy.
You can acquire over-the-counter hay fever medicines from Pharmacy Outlet, a UK’s registered online pharmacy. Immunotherapy procedure is performed under clinical set-up by an allergy specialist.

  1. Watch the basket: Focus on the meaning of the holiday instead of the meals. Make one basket so that all guests that visit can have it.

  3. Rethink about Easter basket: Try to purchase non-traditional gifts such as books, costume, jewellery, etc. They are more appreciated than usual candies, chocolate bunnies or marshmallows. Consider making healthy stuffs.

Enjoy Happy & Healthy Easter

It’s the time of year when chocolate bunnies and eggs are beginning to fill supermarkets. It’s the time when people get carried away while celebrating, neglecting their health. This year, Eater is celebrated on 16th April.

Let’s take a look at some of the personal tips to have a happy and healthy Easter.
Savour Each Bite
It’s Easter! You can eat what you want (within limits) and have a glass of wine. It’s a great holiday, so stay away from overeating in the moments of emotion. Holidays are meant for memories to be made and to enjoy great time with your family. So, allow yourself with a few treats and savour your favourite treat, but do not indulge in overeating.
Tweak Your Tradition
It is always a great idea to go for something healthy. Try something on the healthier side, cook up fresh meat and cut down the sodium as much as possible.
Bring Healthy Options
If you are worried about overeating or going to a party without any healthy treat, try to bring your own. It is always a better idea to come with something special and healthy. You can bring a dish that you can snack on if you are health conscious. Veggies or homemade kale chips are better options.
Hide Easter Candy
It is always tempting to have some delicious Easter candies. In fact, having a few is okay. But make sure you avoid overdoing it. Keep them high and out of reach. It is fine to have some sugar rush, but excess sugar can make things a bit bad.
Fruits Snacks
Make your own fruit snacks using organic, fresh fruits rather than standard fruits snacks containing synthetic colours and artificial flavours.
Homemade Peeps
Easter without peeps is just like Christmas without milk and cookies. Again try to make your own peeps to stay away from those artificial dyes, carnauba wax and preservatives.
Follow these tips to make your Easter happy and healthy. You can even think of starting a supplement containing essential vitamins & minerals.

Things You Should Know About Good Friday

Good Friday is the most melancholic day of the Christian year. It’s the day our saviour died for us. It’s the day we were saved from the bondage of sins by the voluntary death of our God at the hands of man. It’s celebrated on 14th April this year.

Here are a few things you should know about Good Friday:
Why the day is called Good Friday?
Factually, it’s not for the reason you may think. It must be tempting us to say the name must be derived from something good; unfortunately, that’s not the name comes from. Where the name does come from is a dispute. The exact origin of the term “good” is idiopathic. Some say it’s from “God’s Friday”. It is also argued that the name could be based on medieval use of the word holy, thus “Good Friday”.
What happened on this day?
There were many things happened on this day. During the night, Jesus was arrested and taken before the superior priests Annas and Caiaphas. According to gospels, Jesus was taken before Pilate in the morning, was mocked and beaten, was crowned with thorns, was condemned to death, carried the crushing burden of his cross, was crucified between two thieves, forgave those who crucified him, cried out and died.
How do we commemorate this day?
The Good Friday celebrations are connected with Easter. On this day, the church meditates on the passion of the Lord, adores the cross and intercedes for the salvation of the whole world. Good Friday is the only day on which the celebration of Mass is forbidden.
So, what’s good about this Good Friday?
Usually, we associated the term “good” with positive emotions such as love, peace, joy, etc. and certainly not with sadness or tears. Sometimes, those tears can be an outflow of what is good and that’s the aspect of humanity which mourns.
We celebrate the cross on this day. In Jesus, we can see sadness that can be a gift. His love and care led to tears, and his tears led to the cross. And when his tears, sweat and blood hung on the cross, the sacrifice was paid on our behalf. And this is truly good – God’s goodness.
So, what’s good about Good Friday is the God’s love and care expressed through compassion.
Let’s follow our God on this Good Friday and take up our cross and follow his compassion and action.
Let’s give hope to the hopeless, rest to the restless, voice to the voiceless and health to insalubrious.
Let’s do something good on Good Friday!
